Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout)

This Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout) training course provides employees with the knowledge needed to understand the hazards associated with the unexpected energization, startup, or release of stored energy from machines and equipment. The course covers OSHA’s Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) standard, the purpose of energy control procedures, and the roles and responsibilities of authorized, affected, and other employees.

Participants will learn to identify hazardous energy sources—including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, thermal, and gravitational energy—and understand the fundamental steps of a lockout/tagout program. The training covers energy isolation devices, lockout and tagout devices, verification of isolation, release of stored energy, group lockout procedures, and the importance of following employer-specific energy control procedures. Emphasis is also placed on recognizing when equipment must be locked or tagged out and the dangers of bypassing established safety procedures.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to recognize hazardous energy hazards, understand the purpose and basic requirements of OSHA’s Lockout/Tagout standard, identify the roles of employees involved in energy control procedures, and support safe work practices that help prevent serious injuries and fatalities while maintaining workplace compliance.
